Years? They've done it for 2 incremental releases (akin to Service Packs or 8.1); which have always been free to Windows users.

OSX 10.9 (the first "free" OSX upgrade) was launched *after* Windows 8.1.

RE: Windows 10 Free Upgrade
It is a smart move though.

If I had to pay for Windows 10 I would have only upgraded my gaming PC for DX12 reasons.

This way however I can upgrade my tablet (not sure how that will work as it doesn't have enough space for an upgrade install), gaming PC, mums PC and potentially another as I have a retail copy of Windows 8 I can install on something then upgrade.

RE: Windows 10 Free Upgrade
Be nice if some form of DVD (video) support was included in the new version because Win 8 stinks without it. However I won't be holding my breath.

Can't you just install xbmc/kodi? It's free and claims to support DVD playback. Not tried that feature myself but I'm sure it will work fine.

RE: Windows 10 Free Upgrade
Thanks - I'll give that a go. I tried VLC but it is soooooooo picky it refused to play the a DVD I got from a visit to AirKix at Manchester. Error message I get is:-
"VLC cannot set the DVD's title. It possibly cannot decrypt the entire disc."

Fortunately my Lnux machines are quite happy to read and play Smile

What's a DVD? Tongue

Seriously, I just had to plug the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive into my PC to rip a CD I bought recently, as my PCs BD-ROM drive refuses to eject and I don't use it often enough to warrant replacing it.
