Modem/router
Hi all,

I am looking for a cell pipe/ tenda alternative. An all in one. Cheaper the better. What would people recommend?

RE: Modem/router
To get an all in one solution you're talking over £100 and the only one's I know of is

DrayTek Vigor 2750 and that's about £140 give or take.

RE: Modem/router
I'm sure @LittleBigOne use the ZyXEL over the Cellpipe and @Origin_B didn't want to use it because of some bugs if I remember right.

Any reason you'd prefer an all in one setup?

hammer? Wink

It seems you can get unlocked firmware here: http://ftp.ftp.zyxel.com/P-2812HNUL-F1/ - I'm not sure if there is an easy method for applying the new firmware though.

RE: Modem/router
I would highly recommend staying separate. I have never been 100% happy with any consumer router and have no regrets about switching to using a small Atom instead. Although granted, if there was an affordable PCIe VDSL modem card for PC, I would convert THAT into an "all in one" solution.

If you got a VDSL router then it becomes obsolete the instant a better version of DSL comes out (unlikely at this point I think) or you decide to switch to cable or fibre. Also, the actual routing power is always the bare minimum they can get away with. That means if you use it anything other than in the most common configuration, you can run out of CPU power and it slow down your connection. eg Several different clients all streaming Netflix/Lovefilm at the same time.

That was the problem I was having and it wasn't immediately obvious it was causing any issues, until I made the switch and noticed a notable improvement in responsiveness, less problems streaming Netflix while doing other things at the same time.

Then there is the fact that using a dedicated modem you can have it as close to the master socket as possible and run an ethernet cable to your router. This is useful for optimal WiFi reception as having to keep your WiFi access point near the master socket is not likely to be the optimal place for WiFi reception in the house.

RE: Modem/router
I stopped using the Zyxel router LBO supplied simply because it constantly went unstable and required reboots.

So I moved to a open reach modem and used my old draytek that I had from my ADSL days since it had ADSL and WAN inputs this was and always remained solid never requiring a reboot ever but it only had a maximum throughput of 40Mbs so had to unfortunately be replaced.

Since the draytek was so expencive I didn't want to spend that kind of money again so got a 1.2Ghz dual LAN ITX board off eBay think it cost about 30 quid slapped it into a 1U rack case with a old 60GB laptop HDD I had kicking about and installed pfSense on it and it has remained extremely stable and only been rebooted when I have had to unplug it for some reason or doing a software update.

So personally I would keep the call pipe and if the router is under performing just replace that

obtaining the Firmware isnt the problem. installing it is because LBO have locked the modem so you dont have the option to update it. there must be a way round it
