RE: If you're on the lookout for a new router
yeh - looks like it gone back up in price all over

make sure you update the firmware when you get it - if you use the updater on the router itself, it won't update to latest version, you must download it from their website

it's really plug and play, but i'm used to a lot more advanced options on routers

You could always try DD-WRT, would be interesting to see if the WiFi performance is as good as on stock firmware.

RE: If you're on the lookout for a new router
yeh - noticed another issue today, but think this is related to the Humax Freesat box with modded firmware on it

device set to manual ip - but noticing it is requesting a dhcp ip on bootup, which suggests while the device is booting it's connecting to the internet before it's interface is loaded

i do think the logging for the asus is a lot better than other routers I've had

@john1

It's a great router and it just works. There's a setup CD that comes with it but you really don't need it lol!.

@mirdragon

I agree with the con of unable to rename your own devices in the list. You found any way round that at all apart from editing the host devices hostname?

RE: If you're on the lookout for a new router
Nope you can't change it as it only allows mac address and ip

I've submitted a query to Asus about it, lets see what they come back and say

Even my TP-Link would let me assign names to devices - just peeved it went capput Sad

RE: If you're on the lookout for a new router
It seems Merlin has that feature!

Web interface:

Optionally save traffic stats to disk (USB or JFFS partition)
Enhanced traffic monitoring: added monthly, as well as per IP monitoring
Display active/tracked network connections
Name field on the DHCP reservation list and Wireless ACL list
System info summary page
Wireless client IP, hostname, rate and rssi on the Wireless Log page
Wifi icon reports the state of both radios
Display the Ethernet port states
The various MAC/IP selection pulldowns will also display hostnames when possible instead of just NetBIOS names

At moment not putting hacked fw on it - also got to be careful as stuff changed on later models which can result in bricking. The last fw from Asus acknowledges merlin as well

RE: If you're on the lookout for a new router
Hmmm, is DD-WRT considered a hacked firmware too seeing as they had to license the broadcom drivers?

Still I can understand not wanting to fiddle too much if its otherwise working fine though, that is why I ended up getting two routers so if I messed up one I could quickly switch to the other.

Fortunately it wasn't for nothing when I switched to the Atom as I still use both routers as WiFi access points and gigabit switches.
