Digital Region to close part 2
Just been speaking to a guy who works for one of the councils, tells me they have to move schools and council buildings off the network no later than 15th August 2014 prior to closure. Maybe one of the active ISP on here can confirm or otherwise ?

RE: Digital Region to close part 2
Perhaps that's just inferred from the "within a year" as set out in the closure announcement, rather than the actual end date...

No mate he was very specific, they have been instructed that they have to move everyone off the network no later than 15th August 2014. It has left them a major headache !

I quizzed him several times on the dates. If you think about it the four councils are the networks largest consumer with the biggest job to move away, they would be the people to be in the know first presumably.

You are correct that it will be a year from the closure announcement though closure (16th August 2013)

It always seemed a bit unrealistic for them to be migrated off quickly. Then again, the timing is still less than ideal as you would think schools most logical time to migrate to another network is mid August when they are closed.

THIS is what Digital Region should have done:
Los Angeles planning to bring free, fiber-based (3-5Mbit) internet to its 3.5 million residents

The guestimated cost of $3-5bn though is staggering. At least $1000 dollars per resident just for construction. With no public money, it will be interesting to see if there will be any tenders. If the average household is 2 people, then any company has got to make to make $2000 per household just for construction costs. How much money can you make from a The Cloud type portal? Interesting business case.

RE: Digital Region to close part 2
It does sound too good to be true, but if they can sell you enough add-on services I suppose I could be profitable long-term.

That was one of the huge issues with Digital Region, they were too desperate to make a profit ASAP to roll out phase 2. The whole project needed to allow a LOT more leeway with getting established, getting people on the network. You can't setup a network and expect to have thousands of customers overnight, especially when passing the installation cost directly onto the customer.
