i'm fed up of having to plug my 2 TB HDD and have the cable go across the room floor to my laptop. i use it to save my downloads, stream films to my xbox and T.V.

my questions are:

1a) Will i be able to set Vuze or Utorrent to download direct to it?
1b) Will speed be affected?

2) Can i access this data from my mobile, another computer on the go? the idea is to let family access it

thanks for any replies
One feature on this I like is I can see what's connected and what IP addresses it's dished out, also set some machines to have a fixed IP (set on the router)

In the house we have 3 laptops, 4 iphones, 1 ipad, 2 android tablets, 3 PC's and a wifi printer
Also recently got hold of a Chromecast which sends HD movies over the wifi
Not to mention if the kids friends come round they all connect up their gadgets

I've seen the Asus RT-N66U and Asus RT-AC66U recommended (what's the difference? what would make one of these better than the other?)
If anyone has any recommendations then please post!

I have a subscription to MS Office 365 Premium which gives me the ability to install on 5 PCs or Macs and 5 Tablets.

Now I have 3 PCs that have the product installed on and 2 Tablets.

Now based on the information advertised this should only use 3 licences as the tablets should not count towards an install.

But if you use on a Windows Tablet, Microsoft do not class it as a tablet but a PC and thus uses up another licence, meaning that my installations use all my 5 licences.

But if I had 5 PCs and 5 Ipads (or 5 Macs and 5 Ipads) I could install on them all and still only use 5 licences as they class Ipads as tablets.

And no Android tablet seems to be supported

So the actual product is very misleading in the way it is being sold, especially when you see the attached screenshot showing that Windows Tablets are classed under tablets

I have just been playing with the HG612 as I now have two of them, ready for my (seemingly never going to happen as it still can't be ordered) Zen fibre going live.

While fiddling with VLANs so I could use them both via a single WAN port on my router, I have confirmed that you CAN have both the WAN and LAN of the HG612 out of a single ethernet port. I never tried on Digital Region because my WAN speed was so close to the port speed I didn't want the overhead of the HG612 LAN traffic potentially slowing things down. However as BT is capped at 80Mbit (yeah, I'm only seeing 66Mbit so far), it seems unlikely this would ever be an issue, plus it was even more useful now I would be saving TWO ethernet cables not just one.

Basically, I configured WAN to VLAN 2 for one HG612, VLAN 3 for the other, but left both ports unticked for port binding (normally LAN1 is ticked). This allows all traffic to go out of either port and as the WAN traffic is tagged to their own VLAN each, this can be specified on the router to determine which connection should be routed to which modem.

My router is set to establish PPPoE on eth1.2 for Origin and eth1.3 for Zen, and bridge eth1 to the LAN. As I understand it, that means it will only send untagged traffic on eth1 to the LAN and vice versa, thus maintaining isolation.

Interestingly this also means that technically you could just plug the HG612 into the LAN directly and have a router with only a single ethernet port. It would be a bit of a waste of LAN bandwidth though as all Internet traffic would be going across twice, plus it depends on if your LAN switch supports passing VLAN tags or not.

Contract was up with PrimusSaver so I wanted to move back to BT to get BT Basic.

Firstly, after placing the order it caused my fibre order with Zen to be rejected as "other order on the line", UGH. Fair enough, Openreach systems suck, this needs to be done I will have to wait.

Everything seemed fine, activation date was exactly when my contract would run out which seemed ideal.

Wake up today (the day after) and the order is still in progress, fantastic.

Just spoken to the BT Order Management Team who had to chase this up with Openreach. It sounds like basically nothing was happening and now I have to wait until Monday for it to complete, presumably midnight, so another day wasted where I cannot order fibre. Very frustrating as I was also supposed to be getting a call from the BT Basic team tomorrow to get things progressing ASAP, particularly as they would waive the £50 charge for moving back to BT. If its still showing as "in progress" on BTs systems, that can't be done either.

What on earth is going on at Openreach to muck up such a seemingly simple process?

Its really nerve racking having problems like this as if they don't do this right I can lose my number, not really acceptable in this day and age IMO.

Its insane that migrating your mobile number back and forth is so painless but moving your land line number cannot be guaranteed, even when staying with an Openreach line and just moving billing provider. Its not like I'm moving to Virgin. Yet for this privilege they also charge us WAY more than mobiles for line rental.

I really really hate Openreach!

It seems that a fibre cable in London has been severed and this causing problems right across the country.

Seeing as I'm stuck with ADSL for a while but still have access to a nearby BTWiFi-with-FON connection, I decided to try an experiment.

I had heard it was relatively easy to configure multiple WAN round-robin load balancing on Linux so gave it a try between my Zen connection and BT FON. Here are the results:

BTWiFi-with-FON:

Zen:

Dual-WAN:

I'd say that was pretty much a success. Very tempted to try and get a connection on the other BTWiFi-with-FON connections too and try triple or quad WAN, but their signals are much more flaky.

For anyone who is curious, the configuration I used is below:
/etc/iproute2/rt_tables

Quote:#
# reserved values
#
255 local
254 main
253 default
0 unspec
#
# local
#
1 Zen
2 FON

dualwan.sh (run to activate the configuration)

Quote:#!/bin/bash
ifconfig eth0:0 192.168.0.15
ip route add 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 src 192.168.1.15 table Zen
ip route add default via 192.168.1.254 table Zen
ip route add 192.168.0.0/24 dev eth0:0 src 192.168.0.15 table FON
ip route add default via 192.168.0.254 table FON
ip rule add from 192.168.1.15 table Zen
ip rule add from 192.168.0.15 table FON
ip route add default scope global nexthop via 192.168.1.254 dev eth0 weight 1 nexthop via 192.168.0.254 dev eth0:0 weight 1

I could also implement this directly on my router but I'd rather keep it for specific clients for now to avoid messing up things like PSN. I do not believe it would speed up downloads there anyway as neither PSN nor Xbox Live support multi-threaded downloads that I am aware of.

Looking at getting new memory card for my camera (Sony SLT-A58K) - it currently has a Sandisk Extreme 16GB SDHC Class 10 UHS 1 (45MB/s)

Looking at the Transcend 64GB Ultimate SDXC Class 10 UHS-I 600x Memory Card (£28) against the SanDisk SDSDX-064G-X46 64 GB Extreme HD Video SDXC UHS-I Card (£42)

Now the 32GB versions are £16 (Transend) and £20 (Sandisk)

The Transends can perform upto 90MB/s while the Sandisks are 45MB/s

Now I know @SpencerUK does a lot of photography so hopefully he can recommend, but is there much need to go above 32GB

Also if I use my LG G3 for the camera remote it will save the photos direct to my mobile
