Confirmed, Origin have some strange performance issues

I have now been with Origin for a year since they moved from Digital Region to BT and have had fluctuating performance the whole time.

I have put up with it because they offered a really good deal to stay, but that runs out the end of this month so I have gotten connected to Zen. As Origin was on a second line they provided (as my main line had tags problems at the time) I have been able to test both.

Firstly and immediately obvious, Zen has 1-3ms lower latency. This varies based on the PPP session as presumably Zen being a much bigger ISP have several virtual circuits, whereas Origin probably just have the one route over their LLU network.

I will dismiss the fact it has fewer hops as the latency of the first one clearly indicates that it is being tunneled over links where its being routed on Origin.
Was searching on roadworks.org and there's lots of work planned in with Affiniti, but all it says it "Rodding to test duct route in footway.."

Did some Google searches, couldn't come up with much for them in Sheffield, just their international website.

Curious if they already have an existing network or are planning to roll something out as part of the council's "final solution" to broadband in the Centre?

Has anyone ever come across this lot; http://www.affiniti.com/home/

Was searching on roadworks.org and there's lots of work planned in with Affiniti, but all it says it "Rodding to test duct route in footway.."

Did some Google searches, couldn't come up with much for them in Sheffield, just their international website.

Curious if they already have an existing network or are planning to roll something out as part of the council's "final solution" to broadband in the Centre?

A quick explanation.......

In August last year, after been cut off with the closure of DR I complained to CISAS about Origin Broadband. The conclusion of the case was that Origin would release me from my contract and refund the sum of approximately £15. At the time Origin Broadband agreed to this, however I have not received a refund.

I switched to BT in August 2014 and heard nothing from Origin since, that is until last week when I received a call asking me for approximately £110 for phone calls made while I was in contract them. I asked for more information but they could not provide any, they said they would get back to me. I believe the amount may be due to incorrect billing on their part, I never received any kind of itemised bill during my 18 month contract with them, but as I had asked for a package with inclusive calls I did not see this to be a problem at the time. I have also reviewed my contract with them which refers to a VOIP service not the fixed analogue telephone line that I actually had.

Additionally, on the contract, the pricing schedule bears no relevance to the amount I was paying for line rental and ‘Standard Calls’ the contract seems to be geared up for a VOIP service - something I did not have.

I'm still waiting for them to get back to me I suspect they have gone back to BT Wholesale to retrieve the call list.

Just wondered if anyone else has had this type of call and any advice would also be appreciated.

One year on and with the BT contract coming to an end, we've taken a good offer to rejoin Sky TV for a year and I'm now looking at cheaper phone+FTTC providers. BT don't seem too keen on retention offers right now, so it's looking like Plusnet is the next obvious choice. BUT.....Origin is very cheap right now .

Should I consider going back or is that a stupid idea based on their past performance? Anyone on here have any feedback on their service in the post DR era? What about the future security of the business - what would happen to connected customers if the company became insolvent?

my questions are:

1a) Will i be able to set Vuze or Utorrent to download direct to it?
2) Can i access this data from my mobile, another computer on the go? the idea is to let family access it
Looking at the deals and PN have some good ones and works out cheaper than BT plus can use own router
Sky still looking into this but their Fibre package is more expensive and you need to use their own router (anyone tried using a non-sky router on sky)

So anyone have any issues with either Sky or PN - did have PN years ago before Fibre and had no major issues with them - not sure if would need brand new account as still got my old F9 email address
