I was going to get a couple of these way back, but i came accross a bt one on flea bay and kinda took it from there, i cant remember what price these were on offer at now but i think i might have lost out somewhere along the line

A bit of a grave dig and not really suitable for most people, but we've just put a Juniper SRX110B on ours, seems to be working very well - but then for ~£350 you'd hope it would really.

Probably a bit overkill for the most users as you say but it's good that more VDSL devices are becoming available for those who want to try alternatives.
I think most users are now being provisioned with alternatives to the Cell Pipe nowadays anyway. I know my in-progress order will come with a Zyxel (not sure which model yet) instead of the Cell Pipe/Router combo.

Out of curiosity, do we know if you can switch the alternatives into bridge mode for the Internet side?
